Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has asked citizens to stay away from vendors or outlets that make plastic Aadhaar card or PVC smart cards as it is unusable. This is due to the unauthorised printing of QR codes on the card at these shops which makes the card dysfunctional.
The UIDAI in a statement has also warned that using plastic or PVC smart cards can lead to sharing Aadhaar details without consent through deceitful means. …

Aadhaar an ‘improper gate to service’, says Snowden

NEW DELHI: American whistleblower-in-exile Edward Snowden on Sunday called Aadhaar “an improper gate to service” and said demands to link it to various services “must be criminalised.” Snowden tweeted this while sharing an online article authored by former head of Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) K C Verma. This is the third time the former US National Security Agency contractor has tweeted about Aadhaar this month. …

UIDAI to introduce facial authentication for Aadhaar

NEW DELHI: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has decided to introduce facial authentication for Aadhaar for people encountering issues with other forms of biometric verification, like fingerprint and iris scanning.

CHENNAI: From hospital treatment to birth certificates, agencies are insisting on the production of Aadhaar cards despite the government extending the deadline till March 31.
On Thursday night, Chennai resident Jayashree faced hurdles in getting cashless treatment at Fortis Malar. Health insurer Cigna TTK Health Insurance apparently told her that she could not avail of cashless treatment as she did not have an Aadhaar card. Her case created a Twitter storm — with more than 1,300 retweets — and well known figures like Supreme Court lawyer Karuna Nandy and others stepped in to say that the insurer was leaving itself open to civil and criminal litigation as services could not be denied in view of the March 31extension agreed to in the Supreme Court by the government. …

How Aadhaar helped catch over 80,000 teachers who ‘work’ in multiple colleges

Over 80,000 teachers are found to be employed by more than one college or university, according to a recent survey conducted for all higher educational institutions across India. Internet firms ask for Aadhaar to provide services

BENGALURU: Internet companies are now making Aadhaar —the 12-digit unique identity number—mandatory for customers to avail their services. Amazon has asked customers to upload their Aadhaar numbers to track lost packages, while Bengaluru-based car rental platform Zoomcar has said it won’t accept bookings without Aadhaar as proof of identity. 
Amazon said it was a necessary means of authenticating customer identity. “We ask customers to submit a government–certified ID. We understand Aadhaar is the most widely held. So it is our preferred one,” said an Amazon India spokesperson. …

Banks get one more month’s time to open Aadhaar units

NEW DELHI: Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has given banks one more month to open Aadhaar enrolment centres in 10% of their branches as the deadline ended on August 30.
The UIDAI will impose Rs 20,000 as fine per uncovered branch after September 30. In July, the UIDAI had asked all scheduled and commercial banks to open Aadhaar enrolment and updation facility in one out of 10 branches by August-end. The reprieve of one month has now been granted as many banks sought additional time from the authority for setting up Aadhaar facility on their premises. …
