MUMBAI: In one of the highest payouts in recent months, a Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal has ordered an insurance company and a truck owner to pay Rs 1 crore to the widower of a 26-year-old business development Carlsberg executive who died after her scooter was run over by a truck below the Andheri flyover in 2008.
Making no distinction between sexes in financial dependency by a spouse, the tribunal found the widower, now 37, was unemployed at the time of the incident and dependent on his wife. The tribunal said he deserved compensation under such circumstances. Vivek Satam, the complainant from Tardeo, had filed the complaint in April 2011. …

KANPUR: A college student arrested last year for the alleged murder of an 11-year-old boy has managed to prove his innocence and get acquitted with the help of Google. Jai Pratap Singh, alias Mohit, was let off on Thursday by additional district and sessions judge Rajat Singh Jain, who also observed that the role of police in the case was suspicious.
The judge wrote to the director-general of police, urging action against investigation officer Hari Shankar Mishra. …

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat high court has observed that the lower courts should not pass any order without assigning proper and adequate reasons for arriving at a particular conclusion.
In one such “cryptic” order passed by the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT), Junagadh, the high court noticed, “It is a settled proposition of law that the courts are required to support their orders with cogent reasons as it introduces clarity in an order. Appropriate brief reasons, though not like a judgement are a necessary concomitant for a valid order.” …
