New Delhi: Indian passport continues to strengthen on the global index as more and more countries are offering visa-free entry and visa on arrival to Indians. According to a report in the Times of India, the 2019 Passport Index, which ranks passports of 199 countries based on their Visa-Free Scores and their ranking on the UNDP human development index, shows the Indian passport has steadily strengthened over the past five years from 77 in 2015 to 67 in 2019. Last year, it was at 68. …

The government has added new features in the “mPassportSeva” app and will now allow citizens to apply for a fresh passports from the app itself. The mPassportSeva app is available for free download on both Android and iOS . Note that the app is released by ‘Consular, Passport and Visa (CPV) Division’ and not by any other government agency. The process is similar to the existing system that is being followed by ‘Passport Seva’ website. The mobile app has a new interface and here is how to apply for a fresh passport from the app. …

Passports may no longer be valid proof of address for a simple reason: they may not have the current last page with the address of the passport holder if the ministry of external affairs goes ahead with a proposal it is considering.
An MEA spokesperson did not respond to an e-mail seeking comment but Surendera Kumar, under-secretary of policy and legal matters at the consular, passport and visa division of the ministry, confirmed that the change could happen when the “next series” of passports is being issued. “The decision to keep the last page of the passport blank has been taken” to protect the details contained, he explained. …

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has made it clear that a judicial order was not required for including the stepfather’s name in a child’s passport. Justice Rakesh Kumar Jain also overruled objections by the passport authorities on mentioning a stepfather’s name after ruling that he was the child’s legal guardian for all intents and purposes.
The development is significant as the passport authorities were insisting that the stepfather’s name can be mentioned only after he is appointed a legal guardian by the court. …
