New Delhi: A consumer court here has held the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) guilty of “deficiency in service” for not providing garbage bins in a government residential colony.
The consumer forum, New Delhi district, headed by president Arun Kumar Arya, slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on the CPWD, a premier central government authority in-charge of public sector works, while directing it to immediately provide three dustbins to the complainant. …

A three-wheeler, insured by a firm, had met with an accident in 2015. It had caught fire with it driver losing his life due to burns. NEW DELHI: A finance company cannot forcibly take possession of a vehicle for non-payment of dues without sending a notice to the borrower, country’s apex consumer commission has said.
The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCRDC) on Friday ordered a private finance company to pay Rs 80,000 to the borrower whose tractor was seized by the company in January, 2011 for alleged non-payment of dues. …

Ranchi: Jharkhand State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has dismissed an appeal by South Eastern Railway that challenged the district consumer forum’s order of Rs 1 lakh compensation to a passenger who was bitten by rats in the first class coach of Hatia-Howrah Express.
Dismissing the appeal on March 5, the commission, presided over by Justice Tapen Sen, topped the compensation with an additional penalty of Rs 25,000 for the “unwarranted sufferings” of retired SAIL chief engineer P.C. Sinha. …

In a significant decision, the Nagpur District Consumer Forum has asked State Bank of India (SBI) to pay compensation to a customer for sending loan recovery notice for a loan that was already repaid.
“This decision will have long lasting impact on banks for sending recovery notices even after loan was paid and paying no heed to requests of the consumers. The Consumer Forum found deficiency in service by SBI and directed bank to pay Rs5,000 towards mental harassment and Rs2,500 as litigation costs to the consumer,” says Advocate Mahendra Limaye, who represented the customer. …

KOCHI: The state consumer forum has upheld the district consumer forum’s order directing the State Bank of India to return the land documents of a Muvattupuzha native as the consumer has already repaid the whole loan amount.
As per the complaint of Thomas, he took a Rs 4 lakh loan on August 31, 2005 which was supposed to be repaid in 60 installments of Rs 8,645 each. He paid back Rs 5.18 lakh by September 11, 2011. After the loan’s closure, he approached the bank for the title deed but the bank demanded Rs 34,020 in addition to the amount he had paid. …

Nashik: The local consumer forum’s decision to hold parking facilitator Trimbak Municipal Council responsible for a lost vehicle may soon make institutions more responsible towards vehicles parks on their premises.
The decision is also likely to bring to fore the benefits of orderly parking of vehicles. The three-member forum stated in its order: “…since the vehicle was parked in the parking facility created by the council and a parking ticket was issued to the consumer, it becomes the responsibility of the facilitator till the owner returns.
