CHENNAI: From hospital treatment to birth certificates, agencies are insisting on the production of Aadhaar cards despite the government extending the deadline till March 31.
On Thursday night, Chennai resident Jayashree faced hurdles in getting cashless treatment at Fortis Malar. Health insurer Cigna TTK Health Insurance apparently told her that she could not avail of cashless treatment as she did not have an Aadhaar card. Her case created a Twitter storm — with more than 1,300 retweets — and well known figures like Supreme Court lawyer Karuna Nandy and others stepped in to say that the insurer was leaving itself open to civil and criminal litigation as services could not be denied in view of the March 31extension agreed to in the Supreme Court by the government. …

Over 80,000 teachers are found to be employed by more than one college or university, according to a recent survey conducted for all higher educational institutions across India. This massive irregularity was revealed after the HRD Ministry made disclosure of Aadhaar details, which was mandatory as a part of the All India Survey on Higher Education 2016-17 (AISHE). The UIDAI on Thursday dismissed reports of full Aadhaar details being made available on payment of Rs 500 by anonymous sellers, asserting that its system is “secure” and any misuse can be traced and action taken as it maintains a complete log of various functions.

BENGALURU: Internet companies are now making Aadhaar —the 12-digit unique identity number—mandatory for customers to avail their services. Amazon has asked customers to upload their Aadhaar numbers to track lost packages, while Bengaluru-based car rental platform Zoomcar has said it won’t accept bookings without Aadhaar as proof of identity.

NEW DELHI: Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has given banks one more month to open Aadhaar enrolment centres in 10% of their branches as the deadline ended on August 30.
The UIDAI will impose Rs 20,000 as fine per uncovered branch after September 30. In July, the UIDAI had asked all scheduled and commercial banks to open Aadhaar enrolment and updation facility in one out of 10 branches by August-end. The reprieve of one month has now been granted as many banks sought additional time from the authority for setting up Aadhaar facility on their premises. …
